They spend hours and hours of their free time every week trying to communicate with homeowners and inform about the covenants, help people with landscaping plans, explain minimum compliance standards and how to get waivers if necessary and yes, send out violation and maintenance letters. Our HOA board isn't in to tyrannical enforcement or on the board because they enjoy sending out violation letters to people who refuse to abid by the rules they agreed to when they purchased their homes. In dense neighbourhoods what the neighbours do to (and on and in front of) their homes and how they are maintained matters, not just when it comes to resale value but because when the neighbours house is 15 feet away you end up having to live with their choices as well as your own.and therefore some of their business becomes mine. I choose not to look at all those things so I deliberately chose to buy in a neighbourhood that had an HOA whose covenants I agreed with. If you can't stand the idea of anyone telling you you can't keep a boat or RV in your driveway, have chickens in your backyard, have a privacy fence in a neighbourhood of tiny yards with split rail fencing, put upholstered furniture on your front porch, put window air conditioners on the front of your house, paint your house bright blue or leave your trash cans in the driveway for a week then buy in a neighbourhood without an HOA. If there is something in there you just can't live with, then don't buy in that neighbourhood. The HOA covenants and financials are available to read before you purchase your home and you have to sign at closing saying you've read them and will abide by them. Covenants are there to protect the integrity - and property values - of a neighbourhood and an HOA is there to enforce those covenants as well as manage the contracts and necessary maintenance and the budget that funds them. People who sit on neighborhood committees usually feel they're rendering a valuable service to the neighborhood, but they fail to realize that an even better service would be staying out of other peoples' business.īy that logic, one that does't want to be perceived as a tyrannical HOA-Enforcer should not assume the position… right? Which isn't bad, except you want to make all of your neighbors be "riesling and gouda" kind of people as well. I would invite you to our neighborhood social but we usually serve soft drinks and cheddar, and you are clearly a riesling and gouda kind of guy. HOA's, aren't they the ones that were forcing people to continue to use wood shake roof shingles in the wildland urban interface, until the city banned them because of the high fire risk? HOA's, aren't they the ones that don't allow alternative energy sources such as wind and solar? HOA's, aren't they the ones that mandate green grass, and the copious amounts of water necessary to make it grow in this semi arid climate? Do you also have issues with the noise from lawn mowers, leaf blowers, skil saws, electric drills, and snowblowers? You seem to have a thing about noises from automotive maintenance, obviously wrenching is not your thing. I am sure you would fine me for getting the newspaper at the end of my driveway while in my wool pajamas, when the covenants clearly state only silk pajamas. And, I think most HOA's were started with good intentions, until they take the turn towards the Gestapo. "HOA Enforcer", isn't that redundant? I think most people move into HOA's, not realizing how bad they can get.
